Water Balance Model using Water Surface Elevation

Hello: Is there a computer lab example that uses the water balance program that could be downloaded and practiced with. I am modeling the Cheatham Reservoir which is more like a river at the upstream end near Nashville but more like a reservoir near Cheatham Dam at the down stream end. How close should the model be to observed hourly surface elevation data at Cheatham Dam? Respectfully Art Newby

Hi Art, I will email you the ftp site information where the workshop problem files you practiced with back in September are located. Problem 1 is the water balance exercise. The volume calculation in the water balance tool assumes that the water surface in a reservoir will be fairly flat. If your reservoir has significant water surface gradient in the upper reaches it might not work as well. One option would be to modify the water balance tool code so that the volume calculation considers the water surface elevation at multiple segments. If you like, I can send you the water balance tool code. Generally I like the water surface prediction error to be less than several centimeters. chris

Hi Chris, I am just learning to use the program to determine if it will be appropriate for some of our future modeling. I was wondering if you could send me the ftp information you gave to Art, along with any files or programs you can suggest for learning the program. (A tutorial would be incredible!) Thank you for any help you can give me. Nettie Johnston nettie.johnston@bp.com
