Structures and Water Balance

Hi people, I have a little new question, If I run the water balance with or without structures can affect the computations? Do I have to model the structures first or can I do the balance first? And, the corrctions on the water budget, to add the water balance to the model, it's like adding a tributary, copying the qwb.opt changing the name and extension to qdt_br1.npt. But then the program asks for more files containing information of the tributary. thanks Marina

Marina, If you're modeling a reservoir, usually there's a structural withdrawal to simulate the outlet. Do you have outflow data? Generally the outflow data is used to create a outflow file, the model is run, and then the water balance tool is used to calibrate for water level. When you're adding a tributary you'll need to create a temperature input file for that tributary. If you're simulating water quality, a constituent file will also be needed. chris

Thanks Chris, well, yes, I had the outflow date, and I created the outflow file, first I ran the model without any structures, and the water level increased step by step, don't seemed to use this file. Since I entered the data for one structure the water level is more or less stable, like the reservoir modelled. Looking at the output rompts I noted that CE-QUAL-W2 is very sensitive to this data at the bottom of the reservoir, and i had to model the weir more accuretely. But now, I have to model the structures of the dam, that has one spillway, 4 hydraulic weirs, two bottom withdrawals. If I only have the outlet flow, how does the program distribute this flow in all structures? because I don't have the separately flows for each one. Then I asked for the tributary files (at the first models of this reservoir I entered all the inputs at the top of the branch, to simplify the reservoir) because I had run the Water Balance, the steps (at "Completing Water Balance in CE-QUAL-W2") suggested to copy the qwb.opt file to W2 folder, and then change the name and extension of the file to qdt_br1.npt. Marina, If you're modeling the weirs, spillways, and bottom withdrawals as structural withdrawals in the model, you'll need separate flow rates for each hydraulic structure. I recommend modeling them all as structural withdrawals - this will make the water balance easier. The flows will be input to the model as additional columns in the model outflow file. chris
