Oxygen Consumption

I have a problem with modelling the oxygen consumption in the hypolimnion: I can't get the typically oxygen profiles with decreasingly oxygen contents in the depth (mainly in the summer time). With the parameter SOD I can only model lower oxygen concentrations overall, but the profiles are straight-lined. Which parameter or set of parameters I have to take for the correct reproduction of the oxygen consumption in the hypolimnion. Thank you for helping. Best regards, Katja

You probably need to model the sources of the oxygen consumption such as organic matter and nutrient loadings, plankton growth and decay, and CBOD loading. You may want to use the 1st order sediment oxygen demand (SED) as well.

Hi Nick, actually I model plankton growth and decay. And I use the 1st order sediment oxygen demand. What do you mean with CBOD loading? Are there some parameters that I have to change from the default? Looking forward für your answer. Thank you for helping. Katja

CBOD loading is typically the allochthonous inputs such as detritus. If you have BOD measurements for the inflows this would be the place to use them. The defaults should work reasonably well. One suggestion would be to check if the model is producing algae (if not start with an initial concentration of algae). It could be any of a number of things, without more specific details it is hard to give more suggestions or know what may be "missing".
