Bathymetry and Segment numbering

Hi I am modelling a reservoir and need to know if the way I number segments in the bathymetry file will cause problems? Should the first segment be in the riverine or lacustrine zone? Thanks, Ray[addsig]

Good question. This is the way I always set up the bathymetry. I specify branch 1 as the mainstem, then number each branch starting at the most upstream. Segments should be numbered starting at the most upstream. You can do it the other way, start numbering at the most downstream segment, but the model will not handle segment addition/subtraction correctly. Basically, follow the numbering conventions in the figures in the manual. This will be fixed in a future version when we put in an algorithm for adding/subtracting at the end of a branch. This is important for modeling waterbasins with reservoirs that undergo large water surface elevation fluctuations.[addsig]
