Reaeration in ice covered rivers

I'm wondering if there is a way to simulate open leads in an ice-covered river simulation. The idea would be to permit reaeration in user defined segments of an otherwise ice-covered river. I seem to recall coming across something but I can't find it... Thanks! Rod.
