Top and bottom layer height (H) in Bathymetry File

Hi, I am using an already running model from a previous user for Beaver Lake. I have two doubts 1) What is the exact point, which WSEL refer? Is it layer 1 (top boundary cells) top surface or layer 2 top, which is the actual water surface? 2) May I use height H of top and bottom boundary cells zero like we use zero width of inactive cells? Can you help me? Thanks Vijay [addsig]
Forums:

Vijay, The bottom elevation specified in the control file is based on the top of layer KMX or the bottom of layer KMX-1. WSEL is then based on some reference datum. For example, if EBOT is set to 0, then setting WSEL to 10 m means that the greatest depth in the system is 10 m. As for your second question, this is addressed quite thoroughly in the User's Manual and all of the examples. The top boundary layer (layer 1) has widths set to 0. All computational cells below the bottom active cell in a given segment also have zero widths, which includes zero widths for layer KMX. Tom[addsig]

Tom, Thanks! Perhaps I could not explain my second question clearly. I try again. Can we set height (H) of layer 1 and layer KMX as 0? Vijay [addsig]

Vijay, You may be able to do that, but I would set them to mirror the layer height of layer 2 and layer KMX-1, which is what the code requires.[addsig]

I am sorry to have to paste the entire bathymetry file in here but I wanted to see by example how EBOT is estimated. The control file that goes with this bathymetry file has EBOT as 422.100. Can any one show me how they came up with this number? This is the example provided in v3.2 files. Thanks. EBOT is declared in the control file along with the slope of any branches in the model by the model user. The EBOT correponds to the bottom elevation of the furthest downstream segment. Here it would be Seg 36 at the bottom most active layer which has a widths of 98.0 meters. Based on the slope in the control file for the branch the bottom elevation for the upstream segments is then calcualted and then the elevations increase vertically upward for each segment based on the layer thicknesses specified in the bathymetry file above (1.01 m and 10.01 m). The W2 GUI shows all of the layer elevations when you click on the bth button at the top and then the dataview button. This is after you have loaded the control file in the GUI. I hope this helps. Cheers, Rob
