Definition of velocity directions

Seems like it is trivial but I just want to make sure how the horizontal (u) and vertical (w) velocities are defined. My assumption is u is positive if the vector points towards the cell with the higher segment number, that is from upstream to down stream. w is positive if the vector points towards a layer with higher layer number, that is downwards.
