Active Constituents

I am new to W2 and I am trying to figure out the constituent information in the control file. I am puting a model together to just analyze temperature in a reservoir, but it seems that you need to have some active constituents on the CST Active card even if they are all going to be turned off. Looking at the code for the preprocessor it seems that you need to have 23 constituents listed even if youo have 0 constituents listed for all categories on the CONSTITUENTS card. Does it matter which constituents you list to fill in the 23 required lines? And, does it need to be the same number and type as you list on the CST ICON lines?

Thomas, You will need to have the constituents listed in the CST ACTIVE card even if you have water quality turned off (CCC='OFF'). Also, you will need to have these same constituents listed in the CST ICON card, the CST PRIN card, CIN CON card, etc. Make sure that the constituents listed in the graph.npt file are consistent also. The CE-QUAL-W2 code presumes that you will always have the constituents listed in a specified order (look at an example model or the manual for the order), although you can add multiple compartments for certain constituents (like algae, generic constituents, suspended solids) by defining their number at the top of the control file. If you aren't simulating WQ, it might not matter if you mix up this order of the constituents, but I wouldn't try it. Hope this helps, chris

Thanks Chris. Tom

Is this a valid line for the control file CONSTITU NGC NSS NAL NEP NBOD NMC NZP 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 it is causing and error in the CST ACTIVE card for LDOM_P and after

Art, It should work. Make sure there aren't any lines corresponding to algae, zooplankton, bod, etc. in the CST cards. Also eliminate any corresponding lines in the graph.npt. chris

Thanks for the reply I discovered it was the tributary concentration in {CTR CON card} that was my problem, I just had on and off in columns 9 to 16 while I had declared 15 tributaries, I just needed a lot more ons and offs, I finally discovered this when I started using the GUI. My control file is making it through the pre-processor now. The screen showing the plan view of the bathymetry is upside down and east is west, is that just the way the GUI works or is all of the angles I entered 180 deg. off?

Art, It sounds like the angles are off 180 degrees. In the surface shear stress section of the manual there are some diagrams illustrating the convention used to describe segment angles and wind direction (see pages A56-A57). chris
